Pietra-Grey-Limestone

Pietra Grey Limestone

Pietra Grey is a deep charcoal-grey limestone cut through with striking white veining.

The base is a deep charcoal-grey, softened by subtle smoky movement so it reads with depth rather than as a flat dark tone. Across it run bright white veins, sharp and clear against the dark ground, which is what gives this stone its presence. The contrast reads strongly from across a room, so it makes a statement rather than sitting quietly. Over a large floor or wall the veining carries plenty of movement. It suits contemporary schemes and works with white joinery, timber, brass and black tapware.

Where it works

Limestone is a softer, more porous stone, so it wants sealing and a bit of care, and acids will etch it much like a marble. On a dark stone like this, etch marks, water spotting and dust also show more readily than on a pale one, so it is best where it will be looked at rather than worked hard. The bold white veining is the drawcard, so it does its best work as a feature: a wall, a vanity or a considered floor where the contrast can be seen properly. It reads as sophisticated and contemporary, and pairs strongly with pale joinery and timber. The recommended applications for this stone are still being confirmed, so contact us and we can advise on the right fit for your job.

Choosing a finish

Available finishes: Available in polished, honed, tumbled, honed and tumbled, or sandblasted and tumbled finishes, each enhancing the limestone’s deep grey tones, natural texture, and sophisticated contemporary character.

As a guide with limestone, a honed finish gives a smooth, natural matte face that suits internal floors, walls and living areas, and on a dark stone it keeps the look even and hides day-to-day marking better. A brushed or textured finish adds grip underfoot, which makes it the safer pick for wet areas and outdoor use. Limestone is not usually polished the way marble is, though a dark stone like this can take a polish for a sharper, more dramatic contrast if that is the look you want. If you are unsure which finish fits your project, give us a call and we can talk it through.
