Shellstone-Limestone

Shellstone Limestone

Shellstone is a warm shell-beige limestone scattered with delicate fossil and shell fragments.

The colour is a warm shell-beige with creamy ivory tones, soft and inviting. Running through it are delicate fossil fragments, the shelly, textured detail the stone takes its name from, which gives it a genuinely coastal, organic character. Over a large floor or wall it reads as a calm, warm beige from a distance, with the fossil texture rewarding a closer look. It has a relaxed, beachy warmth that pairs naturally with timber, rattan, linen tones, white render and greenery.

Where it works

Limestone is a softer, more porous stone, so it wants sealing and a bit of care, and acids will etch it much like a marble. Shellstone's warm, textured, coastal character is its whole appeal, so it does its best work where that relaxed, natural look belongs: pool surrounds, alfresco areas, courtyards and beachy, natural interiors. The shelly texture also breaks up the surface, which can help underfoot, though how well it suits wet areas and outdoor use depends on the finish and this particular stone's hardness. The recommended applications for this stone are still being confirmed, so contact us and we can advise on the right fit for your job, indoors or out.

Choosing a finish

Available finishes: Available in polished, honed, tumbled, honed and tumbled, or sandblasted and tumbled finishes, each highlighting the limestone’s warm neutral tones, natural shell fragments, and distinctive coastal character.

As a guide with limestone, a honed finish gives a smooth, natural matte face that suits internal floors, walls and living areas, and shows the shell and fossil detail cleanly. A brushed or textured finish adds grip underfoot, which makes it the safer pick for wet areas, pool surrounds and outdoor use, and suits the natural character of this stone particularly well. Limestone is not usually polished the way marble is, since the matte, natural look is the point. If you are unsure which finish fits your project, give us a call and we can talk it through.
